There was $48 billion spent on cancer drugs in 2008 with this number expected to grow to $80 billion by 2012 . DormaTarg is initially targeting: pancreatic, bladder, breast, and prostate cancers, which account for roughly one third of new cases in the United States. The standard pancreatic cancer drug is Gemzar, which costs as much as $100,000 per year, had $1.3 billion in sales in 2008, and accounts for only 50% of patients. Unacceptably, this new drug only adds a few months of varying quality of life. This is, however, a humbling testament for the need of new cancer drugs.
